Chapter Five | Leozeuramun

My nerves were getting the better of me. It wasn't supposed to have gone this far. The plan Seth had put into play was taking longer than we had expected. He'd been in communication with the Mycean Empire capital office but there were a lot of forms to be filled out.

I'd have to go through with the marriage to Zyphera in a few minutes. It was exactly one month past my thirteenth birthday. Nothing short of a deadly illness could delay this ceremony.

Zyphera knew something was up. I'd been distant with her. The opposite of what I should be leading up to our nuptials. I was supposed to be taking her to my bed tonight.

I was supposed to be excited about that.

I knew I couldn't do it. That I'd have to make up some kind of excuse. I wasn't the least bit attracted to her. My nursemaid had explained what I needed to do to fill Zyphera with life.

I'd felt like vomiting.

I leaped up and down, breathing deeply, trying to calm myself. Seth was already standing near the altar with the priestess. I needed to be in place before Zyphera could make her appearance.

We'd practiced yesterday.

I'd gone to my bedchamber afterward and cried.

I strode out to take my position. My mother was already weeping. Everyone kept telling us we were the perfect couple. Childhood friends. Isn't that lovely?

By now, many among the royal court suspected my secret. I'd given up trying to mask my feminine mannerisms. There were whispers when I passed. My father had become increasingly annoyed with me. His disapproval stoked my desire to drop hints among his advisors.

I knew I'd become a nightmare to him.

It pleased me.

Seth cleared his throat, and I looked up from straightening my frilly white cuffs for the hundredth time. At the top of the aisle, Zyphera dressed all in pink waited for me to nod to her.

I didn't make her wait. The nod was traditional; the prince letting the princess-to-be know she had been found acceptable to wed. It was repulsive.

I shifted back and forth on my feet as she approached. I met her in front of the priestess and held both of Zyphera's hands. We spoke the words. Each one ripped my heart apart.

I didn't want this.

I looked at Seth. He had promised me this wouldn't happen. I knew he had tried his best, but his hands were somewhat tied. He wouldn't become the reigning prince until he turned eighteen. That was almost six months away. But even with Seth as Prince, my father would retain some power. We knew we had to find a solution that couldn't be reversed by him.

We'd opted to send me to Mycea in the form of a gift from Crown Prince Seth to King Meshia, knowing full well the king wouldn't want me, and he'd dump me in the Entertainment District.

There had been no whisperings that the king was like me. He wasn't married yet, but according to gossip filtering its way
